Are We Writing and Speaking Correctly? After reading "There is One Correct Way of Writing and Speaking" by Anjali Pattanayak the question “Is there truly a certain way we should be writing?” was evidently answered. Pattanayak argues that English can be used to oppress people from different cultures and lower income classes who have not had the opportunity to receive the same opportunities as native English speakers. Individuals are being pushed to learn a certain style of writing when in reality there is not a specific way to do so. Writing should not be taught only one way because the diversity around us allows each person to apply their knowledge, cultural, and societal experiences into what they want to express through writing. Marginalizing due to one’s level of education or income status defeats the purpose of writing.
